As an Indian, how was your first experience in the United States?

Updated Mar 22
Exact opposite of what we have started to think of Americans now.

When I landed here for the first time, I did not know anyone in the country and had requested an Indian student studying in the same University (who was also a volunteer for Graduate Indian Student Association here.) to pick me up from the airport and the guy did not show up. I had my Indian phone and Indian SIM card, which was not working in the US and unfortunately, I was not able to connect to the airport Wi-Fi either. There were no public phone booths too and it was late at night so, there were not many people around (not even one Indian as I was hoping to seek help from a person, I could identify with.) It had almost been an hour that I had been looking for my options to get to my accommodation as soon as possible, that I saw two policemen literally dragging a handcuffed woman out of the airport. Seeing this, I started to lose my calm. A middle aged white lady had been standing (to pick her mother from the airport) there for sometime and had been observing me going from tensed to worried to restless. She approached me with her friendly smile and tried everything she could to calm me down. On hearing my situation, she asked me not to worry and told me that she is going to drop me to my dorm. When her mother arrived, the two ladies helped me with my extremely heavy luggage drove me to my house. She also gave me her phone number and instructed me to call her whenever I needed help with anything and asked me to give her my phone number as soon as I get one.

It’s been a year and a half since I have lived here and I have celebrated Christmas, New Year, Diwali and Thanksgiving with her. I graduate next month and my family would not be able to attend my commencement, but she and her family would.

This is my experience and I am sure a hundred others have similar experiences. Also, I refuse to judge an entire country on the basis of what a couple of lunatics have done recently.

Edit: Thanks for reading and appreciating my experience. I write anonymously because I am a private person. Almost half the comments are questions about my anonymity. I hope this helps. Peace✌
